From the Curator:
Multifaceted: Art Jewelry in the South offers a broad look at an art form that encompasses a diversity of makers, objects, and possibilities. The show features contemporary craft from nine artists who use jewelry as wearable art to focus on personal, social, and political issues. These artists have backgrounds in traditional metalsmithing, sculpture, and jewelry design. Jewelry’s innate qualities of fine detail and preciousness invite us to take a closer look and interact with the work. Beauty and meaning can be found by viewers who take the time to investigate and discover the details within each object. Some of the themes explored in this exhibition include identity, sustainability, and narrative.
Art jewelry offers intimate investigation into the concepts, techniques and materials used by each artist. The intimate nature of wearable art allows for the work to speak to viewers on a personal level and creates a space in which viewers can bring their own interpretations into the conversation. It is the hope of this exhibition that viewers will both come away with a greater understanding and appreciation of this medium, and take the time to explore these works in their own way.
